Jesus' initial question probes Peter to the depth of his being. He does not try to answer in terms of the relative strength of his love as compared with that of other disciples. He appeals rather to the Lord's knowledge. Despite my bitter failure, he says in effect, I love you - you know that I love you. Jesus accepts his declaration, doubtless to Peter's relief, and commissions him: Feed my lambs.[Pillar Commentary on John, Pg. 677-678]
